In a letter to the German EU Council Presidency and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, published today, over 100 Members of the European Parliament from various political groups call for an international investigation into the poisoning of Alexei Navalny.
Sergey Lagodinsky, speaker on Russia politics of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, and initiator of the letter, comments:
„The EU and Germany’s Council Presidency must ensure that the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most renowned opposition figure, is investigated at the level of the United Nations and the Council of Europe, if possible with support of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
This is the only way to come close to identifying the true background of this crime. We cannot stand by and watch inactively as the opposition in Russia is systematically poisoned.“
