Today, a court in Istanbul ruled that political opponent Osman Kavala has to remain in detention. Sergey Lagodinsky (Greens/EFA), Chair of the Turkey Delegation of the European Parliament, comments:
„The decision is a missed opportunity to initiate a new start for EU-Turkey relations, also in view of the new government in Berlin. It confirms once again that Turkey is in a deep judicial and democratic crisis. Osman Kavala’s lawyers are not given any evidence for the accusations of spying, and yet their client remains in detention. Nothing can justify this.
The Turkish government ignores the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights. The Council of Europe therefore has no choice but to initiate infringement proceedings against Turkey as early as next week. I hope that the majority necessary for this will be achieved.“
